Apache Tomcat Bible
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (01 July, 2003)
Authors: Jon Eaves, Warner Godfrey, and Rupert Jones
Average review score:

Well-written reference; light on Struts
Unlike Tomcat Kick Start, this book tells you explicitly that you cannot use servlets as for your app. This minor but annoying quirk is not documented in the official online doc nor Google-able - indication that the authors did their homework!

Well-organized overall, with the familiar Bible-format. Ant and another Jakarta tool got their own chapters. However, the short shrift given to Struts (<10 pages) and the lack of practice projects (the downside of the Bible-format) prevent me from giving it a higher score.

Thorough coverage of Tomcat and related technologies
Very thorough coverage of Tomcat including introductions to useful tools and technologies such as Ant, Struts, JBoss, log4j, Cactus, JMeter, etc.

I'm not really the type of reader that would read straight through Bible type books so the value is really more as a reference. There are a lot of online resources for Tomcat so I don't think the Tomcat Bible should be seen as a replacement so much as a complementary resource. Especially if you're coming in cold, there are a lot of good pointers to tools and technologies that you should follow up on.

I didn't expect thorough coverage of Struts given that this is the Apache /Tomcat/ Bible and not the Struts Bible.

An excellent tutorial and reference
It is always a wonderful thing to find an excellent technical reference that is also highly *readable* - the enthusiasm of the authors for the subject is obvious to the reader and their pragmatic approach most welcome.

Regardless of if you are an experienced developer or beginner, I believe you will find a wealth of information in this book to justify the purchase. (I found the sections on how tomcat manages classloading and security of particular interest).

I believe that if your primary development and deployment platform is tomcat then this book will be of great use. Although this book is somewhat Windows centric, those of us who use real operating systems (i.e. Unix based derivatives) will still find real value from this book.

The authors obviously have deep experience with the platform and
I can only highly recommend this book to anyone working with Tomcat

Barbara Cartland: Three Complete Novels of Earls and Their Ladies: A Gentleman in Love, Gift of the Gods, Music from the Heart
Published in Paperback by Random House Value Pub (January, 1996)
Authors: Barbara Cartland and Warner
Average review score:

This is the worst romance book I have ever read
The book starts out with promise, all of the stories seem to. By the end of all the stories, the woman can't even talk without stammering and they "magically fall in love" if you want to read a romance book just to laugh at how stupid it is, read this

For the romantic at heart (cynics please abstain)
The first time I read a Barbara Cartland book, I was transported, as she would write, like an angel up to heaven! Her stories are a combination of the "Contesse de Ségur" books I loved as a child and the "Angélique" movies I still love as a woman. I love the way she writes. Perhaps I am old-fashioned, but her tales of innocence and tenderness touch me on a fundamental level.

A trilogy worth reading.
If you are a Barbara Cartland fun , I strongly recoment that you read it.Thalia, Penelope and Alisa,Illouka and the three Earls will travel you back to the eigtheen century where love will eventualy find it's way.Music from the heart,I think is the best of the three novels.(FOR ROMANTIC SOULS ONLY! )

Bicycle Shmicycle
This is not a very good book. The plot isn't good and the charoctors are corny.Henry, jessie,Violt and Benny go on a bicycle trip.In the middle of it a rainstorm spoils the fun.So they have to take shelter in an abanded warehouse where they run into a mystery.Beleve me after reading 14 of these you get tired of these mystorys that are strikingly similer.

(...)Amazing Story of the Bicycle Mystery
I thought this was a very good book. When the reader was reading the story I realized that the children in the book were very helpful. I think that this would be a goood book for people to read. This is a good book for children because when they read it it will help them be more respectful when they grow up. So its a good book as you can see.

My Favorite One!
I like this book because I love bycicles. It's neat how they go back and see things they saw in other books. And I wish my dog acted like the little dog Shadow, whom the boxcar children found. It was fun finding out whose dog it was! I would deffinantly recommend this book to anyone, and especially to boxcar children fans. READ THIS BOOK!

Average review score:

Not one of her best
This book is OK. The plot is weak and too unrealistic as wellas boring. Somehow the end is pretty good though.

More about the mystery than about the kids who solve it
The story sometimes becomes too simple, but overall it'sexciting, the mystery has several unexpected and interestingly resolvedhappenings. Not the best, but a nice reading. Not as much about the children and their relationships, but basically centered on an okay mystery.

The Cereal Box Mystery
The boxcar children The Cereal box mystery by Gertrude chandler warner, is a magnificent book. It is a story of 4 children: Benny, violet, henry and Jessie, who are the boxcar children. They have not one mystery but two mysteries at the same time. At the jewlry store a ruby set is stolen. Later Benny's favorite silver stars
Stolen too recommend this book to people who like the creal box mystery.
There more books in the series like The Niagara Falls mystery and so on.

Diane Warner's Complete Book of Baby Showers: Hundreds of Ways to Host a Unique Celebration
Published in Paperback by Career Press (April, 1998)
Author: Diane Warner
Average review score:

Spend the [money] on mom-to-be, not on this book!
This book has a few useful suggestions for shower themes, but is otherwise useless. The games are all pretty stupid and sound boring. I'd be embarassed to ask my guests to play them. Even many of themes are pretty bad (although there are a few good suggestions). As an example, Warner suggests a theme where you ask all the guests (including the men) to come pretending they are pregnant (i.e. with pillows stuffed under their shirts). If I were the mom-to-be, I'd probably turn right around and leave the party when I saw that. Late pregnancy is unpleasant enough without being made fun of for it. The recipes section is even worse. Most of the foods sound remarkably unappealing. To top it off, the beverages section is packed with recipes for alcoholic drinks. Maybe it's me, but I can't imagine anything dumber than making a champagne punch the centerpiece of your buffet...remember, mom-to-be (the guest of honor) can't drink! Especially if she would otherwise it, it seems terribly thoughtless and inconsiderate to serve alcohol. The only value I derived from this book is some very clear ideas about what not to do. It happens, that all of the things I learned not to do were a) things the book suggested doing, and b) things it would never have occurred to me to do anyway. Take the [money] you were going to spend on this book and buy something for the baby.

There's more than just the traditional Baby Shower...
...I'm a busy Hostess, always planning Baby Showers - and always looking for new and fun ideas. Diane Warner has a wonderful collection of themes with ideas on how to carry the theme through the invitations to the decorations and food. She inspires readers to think beyond the traditional Baby Shower with great ideas and useful tips for a fun approach to Baby Showers. You'll have as much fun hosting the Baby Shower as your guests will have enjoying it!

A fun book packed with great ideas!!
This is a great book on Baby Showers..the best I have seen! It is so so well written with easy to understand ideas for really cute, unique baby showers!! Diane Warner's sense of humor also shines through, making this a pleasure to read. I gave a baby shower for my best friend, using a combination of ideas gathered from this book, and everyone raved! I highly recommend this book to others who want to give a really fun, great baby shower for someone!!

Dreamweaver for Dummies
Published in Paperback by (June, 1998)
Author: Janine Warner
Average review score:

Poorly edited copy spoiled an otherwise decent introduction
The content is a fine introduction to the basics, as a previous reviewer remarked. Within 3 hours though, I had dumped the book and was well beyond its scope just by exploring the trial copy of the software (included).

However, I do have one huge complaint. The author and publisher have no business charging the cover price for a book they haven't bothered to spell-check or proof read. I found countless spelling and grammar errors (sometimes several on the same page) in my copy. In a technical book, where I tend to read every word, I find this very distracting.

Great beginning introduction
I did not need this book. Dreamweaver is a relatively easy program to get through the basics, which is the extent of the content in this book. After a couple of hours, I had finished all of the content and I was not even sweating. ;->

This book is a nice introduction for those who need one. If you are a full fledged programming type, you would be best to look elsewhere. This book does not cover enough of the advanced material to make it worthwhile.

However, it is nicely written for beginners to HTML, who are starting out with Dreamweaver as their first editor. It is also a great book for those who find Macromedia's methodology to be similar to learning a foreign language, as I do.

What the book covers: 1. The Dreamweaver application and its windows. 2. WYSIWYG editing and the HTML editors bundled with the program. 3. Basic DHTML and how to design for multiple browsers. 4. Coverage of the many nice features, including pre-loading of graphics, add "rollovers" and a basic idea of moving sites to Dreamweaver from other HTML editing programs. 5. HTML features like tables and frames. 6. Cascading Style Sheets. 7. An intorduction to the author's ideas on good web design and optimizing a site.

What is missing: 1. Advanced features like creating your own behaviors and objects. 2. A thorough explanation of how to use Dreamweaver alongside of other HTML programs. For example, it would be nice to note that Dreamweaver can work very nicely with FrontPage. Use FrontPage for management and Dreamweaver to add sparkle.

Overall, this book is nice if you are beginning to work with HTML or do not have the time to experiment with Dreamweaver. It is also nice for those who need a little boost on the easy way to create DHTML effects and create these pages in a manner that works with all 4.0 browsers, while offering support for non-DHTML browsers as well. If you are looking for something more advanced, I would look elsewhere.

I sure was glad to find this book.
Being new to Web design, I sometimes feel like a true "dummy" when I'm trying to get the HTML to do what I want it to. This book was written to my level and made lots of things easy to understand. For example, the author explained exactly when to use JPG vs GIF and how to use tables to arrange graphics. She also helped me understand transparency -- when to use it and how. I certainly recommend Warner's Dreamweaver for Dummies to any other Web site neophytes.

Ghor, Kin-Slayer: The Saga of Genseric's Fifth-Born Son

Ghor, Kin-Slayer: The Saga of Genseric's Fifth-Born Son
I have been a fan of Mr Howard for nearly 12 years now, which in my opinion, makes me a bit of a connoisseur, and frankly this book was a bit of a disappointment. Undoubtedly the contributing writers are well-respected and immensely able but their writing lacked the Howardian flavour I have come to love. Ghor's sudden personality shifts are hard to follow and the various ideas in the story lack sufficient depth. This book is not the way Mr Howard would have written it. Nevertheless, this should be read because the original idea belonged to the great REH.

GHOR is the Cthulhu's Conan.
Ghor is a nice blend of Conan and the Cthulhu Mythos together. Abandoned as a child because of a deformity, Ghor is adopted by a pack of wolves. Raised by them, he adopts the ways of the wolf, yet when he meets up with humanity joins them. Constantly struggling with his wolf upbringing and his human surroundings, Ghor becomes a mighty war hero wherever he goes.

This is an excellent adventure book that takes a Conan like hero and plots him against all sorts of evil (and good), including some Cthulhu creations as well.

Originally Ghor was an unfinished story by Conan creator Robert Howard. Upon finding this unfinished story, a magazine decided to finish it. What they did was have a different chapter every month written by a different top fantasy writer. It made the reading interesting.

While most of the chapters were great. Some were excellent. Unfortunately there were a couple chapters that I just wanted to get through to reach the next writers' chapter. Overall a really good read.

EXCELLENT BOOK
I WAS VERY SUPRISED ABOUT HOW WELL THIS STORY CAME OFF. THE VARIUOS WRITERS DID AN EXCELLENT JOB IN WRITING AN EXCITING BOOK THAT FLOWED SMOOTHLY. IT DID NOT COME OFF AS A SERIES OF SHORT STORIES. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK FOR ROBERT E. HOWARD FANS, AND FANS OF FANTASY IN GENERAL.

Hollywood Be Thy Name: The Warner Brothers Story
Published in Paperback by Prima Publishing (September, 1994)
Authors: Cass Warner Sperling, Cork Millner, and Jack Warner
Average review score:

Too many inaccuracies
If the authors of this book spent so much time researching (11 years according to the Kirkus Review above) then one wonders why their historical contextualization is as sloppy and superficial as it is. Let me cite one egregious example. On page 274, the authors explain that Elia Kazan's naming names fed Joe McCarthy's ambition which resulted in the blacklisting of the Hollywood 10. In fact, McCarthy had absolutely nothing to do with the Hollywood 10 (who were blacklisted in 1947--McCarthy didn't rise to fame until 1950), and Elia Kazan wasn't brought before HUAC until years later. Any high school history textbook will be clear about this. Also, the melodramatic quality of this book, especially in its fictionalized dialogues, leads the reader to question whether the authors had any intention of writing a factual book, or whether they wanted to invent a history that was dramatic and would sell a lot of copies.

More Than a "Rags to Riches" Story of Hollywood's Beginnings
I read "Hollywood Be Thy Name" with great interest and curiosity. Author, Ms. Cass Warner Sperling has kept her unspoken "promise" made to Grandpa Harry (patriarch of the Warner brothers) at his deathbed when she was a ten year old girl, to convey to others his deep beliefs and ideals.

I rate it 5 stars because the story and writing style paints an incredible picture of not just another "rags to riches" story but one of tragedy and great sacrifice leading to an enduring legend of the motion picture industry directly because of the "can do and make it go right" attitudes of the Warners.

From the family gold watch (later to be hocked in order to secure payment for the brothers first projector) placed in 1883 into the secret pocket of Benjamin Warner for his immigration to America into New York and the arrival of wife Pearl and children less than a year later, to a realization of a movie empire that had as its motto "Educate, entertain, and enlighten" which is a Hollywood legacy.

A must read for movie buffs and those interested in the beginnings of Hollywood. This is a book that has "all the right stuff" for the making of a fascinating mini-series as told by granddaughter Cass and others.

Shelley Abate, movie buff and avid reader.

Passion and Persistence: Ingredients for Success
Not simply a biography, Hollywood Be Thy Name is a moving and motivational series of lessons in persistence in the face of great challenges.

The reader is left with no doubt that while the Warner Brothers, Harry, Jack, Albert and Sam, made astute business decisions in building their company from its austere begginings in 1907, to the empire that became known as Warner Brothers Studios, the growth and succcess was fueled by an unmistakeable passion for moviemaking.

The book is well written by Cass Warner Sperling, grandaughter of Harry Warner and Cork Milner.

Hollywood by Thy Name also serves as a moving documentary-a history of early Hollywood. (Thirty two page photo insert).

Students of Hollywood history will find the book illuminating. Movie buffs will find it entertaining and those interested in the business side of this business we call "show business" will find it educational.

Interviews with Jack Warner Jr. and Ronald Reagan are highlighted but the real stars of "Hollywood Be Thy Name" are the brothers themselves, truly the earliest of the rags to riches stories and whose legend lives on through this book.

The Mystery of the Purple Pool (Boxcar Children Mysteries, 38)

Boxcar Children--blaarghh
What an insult to the world of children's literature!! It already tells you something that on most of the Boxcar Children books, it doesn't even tell you the author, merely saying "Series created by Gertrude Chandler Warren." The characters are flat and inane, the plot is one-dimensional and predictable but still completely outlandish (I mean, finding out who put purple ink in the pool? come on!). I could go on and on about these ROTTEN books, but now all I'm going to say is...someday you'll be sorry if you give your children these books to read instead of the beautiful, humoristic, thought-provoking and stimulating books that intelligent and thoughtful people have written for children.

The Mystery of the Purple Pool
Grandfather takes the Alden children to New York City, where they find excitement right in their hotel when someone switches the salt and sugar in the coffee shop, steals from the guests, and dyes the swimming pool purple. Why would someone do this. Te Boxcar children are going to get to the bottom of this.

Best of the Boxcars
This book was one of the best Boxcar children books that there is. It was well written and really suprised me with the way that it turned out. If you are looking for a good kids mytery book, this is the one to choose.
